Would Jesus eat at Burger King if he knew about their shenanigans? Burger King has allegedly been spying on tomato pickers rights groups. Democracy Now had an interview yesterday with the reporter who broke the story and with the coordinator of the Student/Farmworker Alliance. All of this is an effort to keep quiet the treatment of workers that provide tomatoes to Burger King (and McDonald’s and Taco Bell).
When Jesus stood up at the synagogue in Nazareth and quoted Isaiah 61, which says, “He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to captives and freedom to prisoners.” It turns out there are some tomato workers down in Florida who are need of some liberty from captivity. There were several workers being kept in a Uhaul and forced to pick tomatoes.
Slavery is alive and well, my friends, and it’s in your burger.
